Liberty Mutual Canada is seeking a Contract Surety Executive Underwriter to join our Toronto office. In this role, you will be responsible for marketing, underwriting, and servicing a portfolio of clients across Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

Leveraging your strong relationship-building skills, you will develop and maintain long-term partnerships with brokers and clients, focusing on sustainable growth rather than transactional sales. You will apply your financial and business acumen to conduct in-depth credit underwriting, perform financial and risk analysis, and make informed decisions on both new and existing accounts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and strengthen Liberty Mutual Surety’s presence across Ontario and Atlantic Canada by developing relationships with brokers and generating new business opportunities. Act as a trusted advisor by communicating our underwriting appetite, policies, and value proposition.
  • Lead the origination, evaluation, and underwriting of surety opportunities, including complex transactions.
  • Develop and manage a balanced book of business, ensuring alignment with production, profitability, and growth objectives.
  • Perform detailed financial analysis, including trend and ratio analysis, to assess risk and determine appropriate underwriting positions.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, identifying emerging risks and recommending proactive strategies, including mitigation plans or exit strategies where required.
  • Analyze risk exposures, loss history, and market conditions to determine appropriate coverage structures, terms, and conditions.
  • Maintain ongoing oversight of assigned accounts, ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and internal controls.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to deliver exceptional service and identify cross-selling opportunities across Liberty Mutual product lines.
  • Participate in client, broker, and internal meetings, providing insights and strategic recommendations.
  • Ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements, internal policies, and underwriting best practices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance workflows, processes, and operational efficiency.
  • Support team objectives and initiatives, fostering a collaborative, high-performing environment.
  • Undertake special projects and additional responsibilities as required.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Finance, Accounting, or related discipline, or equivalent experience in Surety Underwriting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Surety Underwriting experience, with Contract Surety experience preferred and considered a strong asset.
  • Confident and professional presence, with the ability to effectively engage clients, brokers, and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated experience in marketing and account management.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within team and social settings.
  • Solid understanding of economic, political, and market trends impacting the business environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships across diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of business development and the ability to identify and capitalize on growth opportunities.
  • Strong technical knowledge of surety underwriting, including the ability to implement effective underwriting practices and operational processes.
  • Demonstrated strength in numeracy, literacy, and technology, with the ability to balance attention to detail and big-picture thinking.
  • Collaborative team player with a strong commitment to delivering results.

Target Hiring Range: CAD $140,000 – 173,000

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role, however, offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
