Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean (or designate), the Applied Science Lab Assistant assists with the setup of bioscience labs, cleaning glassware, and assisting professors with ensuring that students remain safe in labs. Assists with administrative and clerical tasks to assist the Dean and/or Associate Dean.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up labs by staging supplies, preparing equipment, and ensuring readiness for classes
  • Monitor lab safety, ensure clear access to emergency equipment, and support incident reporting
  • Perform light maintenance of lab equipment and conduct routine safety checks (e.g., eyewash stations)
  • Clean and maintain laboratory glassware, surfaces, and workspaces
  • Assist with inventory management, including tracking and ordering supplies
  • Support communication by reporting faculty and student concerns to the Dean’s office
  • Provide general administrative and clerical assistance
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • 2-year post-secondary diploma in a related field (e.g., bioscience or lab technology)
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant laboratory or academic experience
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, biosafety practices, and WHMIS guidelines
  • Experience maintaining lab equipment and cleaning glassware
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures
  • Organizational and inventory management skills
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for light equipment maintenance
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office)
