Environmental Assessment Operations

Environmental Assessment Office

Ministry of Environment and Parks

Various Locations, BC

The Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) is a stand-alone, neutrally administered regulator that is required by law to conduct rigorous, thorough reviews of major projects in British Columbia, including some of the largest industrial projects in Canada. The environmental assessment process requires that any potential environmental, economic, social, cultural and health effects that could occur are thoroughly assessed. The EAO is part of the Ministry of Environment and Parks, which is responsible for the effective protection, management and conservation of B.C.’s water, land, air and living resources. Supporting reconciliation with First Nations is a key purpose of the EAO.

Supporting multiple ministers who are statutory decision-makers on environmental assessment certificate decisions, the Associate Deputy Minister provides leadership and strategic direction in the independent administration of the environment assessment act. Relationship building is key in working with diverse internal and external groups, as the Associate oversees the development of service standards according to the needs of clients and within the realm of government policy and available resources.

The ideal candidate for this role is a senior manager or executive with significant leadership experience. A model of accountability, innovation, and resilience, they naturally build teams that embrace these values. This candidate is also an exceptional communicator who thrives in complex environments with competing priorities and diverse partnership demands. They are trustworthy and have the highest level of integrity, which aids them in building strong and lasting relationships across business lines and with various partners. They are also grounded by their experience building strong, strategic, respectful relationships with First Nations leaders, supporting effective partnership in complex, high-profile and challenging processes.

Role profile is attached. The appointee will be required to consent to a criminal record check and will be required to complete a Conflict of Interest Disclosure, including declaring any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest.

The BC Public Service is committed to creating a diverse workplace to reflect the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens. Consider joining our executive team and being part of an innovative, inclusive, and rewarding organization.
