JOB SUMMARY: The
RECE - Urban reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gathering Program Supervisor.
The Registered Early Childhood Educator is responsible for leading and contributing active delivery of a high-quality cultural program for Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gatherings by offering play-based, child-centered learning experiences to support children’s holistic development and to create a hub of support for our community and creating a sense of belonging for children and their families.
The RECE will ensure the implementation of “How Does Learning Happen”, Excerpts from ELECT document, compliance with the Ministry of Education and comply with Six Nations Elected Council Employment Policy, the Six Nations Council Health and Safety Guidelines, Family Gatherings Policy and Procedures and Parent Handbook.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Early Childhood Educator Diploma and registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators or equivalent from a recognized community college
- An equivalent college diploma from a recognized community college with 2 years’ work experience with children aged 0 to 10 and families
- Thoroughly familiar with relevant legislation, regulations, and guidelines, i.e., requirements as set out by the Child Care and Early Years Act as well as “How Does Learning Happen” excerpts from ELECT document,
- Good organizational skills and an ability to lead as strong team player, good interpersonal skills.
- Knowledgeable about the Haudenosaunee Six Nations social character and culture, language, and traditions.
- Familiar with traditional approaches to assist children and families.
- Work experience with special needs children an asset
- Availability and flexibility for working various shifts during weekdays, nights or possibly a shift on the weekend.
- Possesses excellent communication skills; verbal and written
- Will have access to a reliable insured vehicle and must have a valid class “G” Ontario driver’s licence or willing to obtain, as required.
- Must be willing to travel to other satellite sites, and may be requested to move sites in both Family Gatherings and/or Child Care Centres.
- Must pass a medical examination and immunizations are up to date.
- Must pass a criminal records/vulnerable records check.
- Must have a valid certificate in First Aid/CPR or willing to obtain one.
- A good understanding of the theory and practice of family support programs in the Six Nations community and surrounding areas.
- Preference will be given to Haudenosaunee, Six Nations band members.

POSITION TITLE: Registered Early Childhood Education (RECE)
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ – Family Gathering Program Supervisor.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
TECHNICAL
- Maintaining a high-quality interactive program for families, children, and our community
- Identifying areas that will enhance the developmental areas of the child including curiosity, self-esteem, and cultural awareness
- Planning, writing, implementing and evaluating activities/curriculum that will enhance the interactive between parents and their children, group programs and individual activities, indoor and outdoor activities: active and passive play.
- Keeping a daily journal/record observations of behaviours
- Plan, develop and implement activities that coordinate with summer camps/PD days/Mid Winters/March Break activities and outings.
- Ongoing communications with parents and children
- Plan and lead daily cultural and language activities.
- Cleaning and maintaining furniture, toys and equipment including counter space and sink, in designate area
- Changing and rearranging furniture, toys, and equipment for variety
- Applying safety procedures and handling emergencies appropriately
- Encouraging self-help skills that are age and developmentally appropriate.
- Following behavior management guidelines.
- Daily outdoor play/walks weather permitted.
ADMINISTRATION
- Implement the How Learning Happens framework or any future childhood developmental tools that may arise while in the position.
- Reporting statistics from each program directly to the Supervisor and/or Ministry
- Acting as a role model and leader for parents/caregivers, students, volunteers, Early Learning Facilitators, and any other visitors in the programs.
- Planning and implementing parent meetings or programs
- Observing individual child’s development, and working in collaboration with special needs resourcing to develop and implement individual programs and writing progress reports
- Assisting in promotion activities/fundraising
- Operate within multi-agency networks to ensure the correct support is available
- Attending in-service training as well as surrounding areas
- Provide one-on-one supports/counselling to parents, caregivers, and children in form of referrals, linkages with other professionals
- Creative activities ready and set out for the next day (prior approved by the Supervisor)
- Computer knowledge and some experiences with data collection and reporting
- On-going upgrading your skills through workshops, courses, training to advance professional development, as required.
- Name tag is required
COMMUNICATIONS & LIAISON
- Working cooperatively with all staff enhancing relationships with community resources and collaboration with existing programs and services on and off Six Nations of the Grand River communities
- Maintaining confidentiality and ensures compliance following Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) legislation regulations
- Maintaining a team approach to resolving such issues, conflicts and problems that may arise in the process of providing support services
- Maintaining confidentiality as per Six Nations Council Employment Policy.
- Assisting in the promotion of the Family Gatherings and out-reach program by advertising, utilizing social media, making presentations and preparing posters, pamphlets and newsletters, as required.
- May be reassigned locations within Family Gatherings, or SNGREC child care centers as requested.
- Facilitating a workable relationship with children, parents, and all other staff members
- Attending and participating in regular staff meetings as required/directed as well as training/workshops
- Involving supervisor and staff in decision making respecting unit problem solving, planning and development
OTHER RELATED DUTIES
Any other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor which includes, but is not limited to, participation in the Six Nations Emergency Response Plan, Pandemic Plan of Response, and the Trauma Events Response Team (TERT).
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Not limited to a specific location, could be deployed to work at any Family Gatherings or childcare location. Compensation amounts will vary depending on site.
- Work involves mental stress, balancing multiple projects in a workload with broad ranged focus, constant interaction with partners, community members, staff and relevant agencies.
- Working in a climate-controlled environment while on site
- Subject to deadlines, interruptions, and evening or weekend work hours, and the ability to take direction, and work effectively and independently.
- Expected travel inside and outside of the community with the possibility of using personal transportation.
- Responsibility of safely transporting clients/families in a reliable insured work vehicle in all weather conditions
- Patience and flexibility working with and around children and their families in the work environments
- Some lifting and moving of furnishing, supplies and equipment daily
- Flexibility in works hours as required
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Must be able to be a leader and mentor and also work independently as a team player within the Six Nations Social Services and all other work environments.
- Mentorship and collaboration with the Early Learning Facilitators
- Establishing positive, collaborative working relationships and linkages among all service providers within all work environments.
- Receives supervision, instruction, direction and guidance in planning, priorities and interactions to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.
Works with the Supervisor of Family Gatherings
- Always receives direction and guidance practicing professionalism.
- Willingness to discuss plans, priorities and interacts to ensure tasks are done efficiently and effectively.
- Working with the supervisor to maintain administrative duties, including program planning, inventory and collection of statistics.
With the Directors and Managers
- Acting as a resource providing information and assistance in a cooperative and courteous manner.
With the Community
- Working in a cooperative and courteous manner that promotes cultural safety and represents SNGREC and the Social Services Department,
- Represents and promotes SNGREC, Social Services and Child Care Services, and the Gahwajiya:de’ Detenatgwa’ta’ Family Gatherings Program in a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner.
- Familiar with Six Nations Council Employment and Health and Safety policies and procedures.

- Thoroughly familiar with relevant legislation, regulations, and guidelines, i.e., requirements as set out by the Child Care and Early Years Act.
- Ability to teach primary words/phrases from either Mohawk/Cayuga Language
- Ability to be patient, and can relate to children and adults with equal respect and dignity, regardless of life experiences, culture and values
- Work experience with special needs children an asset
- Excellent computer skills and demonstrated proficiency in current business software.
- Excellent written and effectual oral communications skills working with adults and children.
- Good organizational skills and an ability to work independently and as a strong team player, good interpersonal skills.
- Sensitive to and act on the individual child’s developmental needs.
- Knowledge of WHIMIS will be considered an asset
Errors in judgment and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, and public confusion, serious impacts on clients and staff, and legal liability to self and to Six Nations Council.
