Primary function
In support of LAO’s strategic goal of organization excellence, ACU conducts random audits of LAO payments and risk-based targeted audits to ensure lawyer compliance with rules and regulation. This function supports entity risk management by assessing legitimacy of billing and identifying errors and potential trends in non-compliance. ACU functions also ensures the appropriate use of public funds.
The ACU collaborates with internal departments to enhance system improvements and implement preventative controls aimed at reducing non-compliance, while educating lawyers on proper billing procedures.
This position plays a key role in supporting the department by conducting random, targeted and billing patter audits to assess lawyer compliance with the Tariff and Billing Book, Legal Aid Services Act, and Better Billing Bulletins. Reporting to the Manager, within an environment of rapid change, this position focuses identifying potential overpayments generated by non-compliance with LAO billing rules.

Key accountabilities
- Perform a high degree of independent work, while actively collaborating with team members to ensure consistency, knowledge sharing, and alignment on audit practices.
- Apply and interpret complex billing rules, ensuring compliance with requirements that vary based on effective dates, policy updates, and time-specific provisions.
- Manage a high volume of concurrent audits, prioritizing workload effectively and efficiently through strong time management and organizational skills
- Prepare clear, professional communications to lawyers that address the keys billing issues of the audit findings, setting out facts cogently, objectively and accurately in appropriate detail, and including a well-reasoned analysis and objective assessment of accounts
- Provide guidance, references and education to lawyers on proper billing practices and compliance expectations
- Identify and communicate emerging billing risks and trends to management
- Collaberate effectively with internal teams to support compliance initiatives and continuous improvement
- Provides advice and input on key data requirements and decision points in all audit processes
- Identify opportunities and make recommendations for improvements to portal functionality and work procedures to decrease risk and increase efficiency.
Required Skills & Experience
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective communication and stakeholder engagement
- Demonstrate exceptional time management skills to effectively manage a high volume of concurrent audits while meeting strict deadlines.
- Experience with comparing policies, procedures and regulations to ensure compliance with processes
- Experience with Excel and the PeopleSoft
- University degree or equivalent training in regulatory compliance or auditing.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in related fields such as regulatory or compliance audits.
