WHO WE ARE
Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) is a non-profit organization that provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Our mission is to create an inclusive community by offering athletes the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and build lasting relationships.
With over 23,000 athletes and over 7,500 volunteers across the province, we are committed to building diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities that celebrate the abilities of every individual.
Special Olympics Ontario and the Welland Pelham Community Council are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to help strengthen local programs and enhance the athlete experience.
Step 1: Register Online · Visit the Special Olympics Ontario Membership Portal.

- Create an account and complete the online application form.
- Select the community – Welland-Pelham
Step 2: Obtain Necessary Documents and Training
- Police Record Check: Request a Vulnerable Sector Search from your local police service (a request letter is provided).
- References: Provide two non-related references.
- Safe Sport Training: Complete the free NCCP Safe Sport training online and upload your completion record.
Step 3: Await Approval & Contact
- Your application will be reviewed by a community contact.
- You will be contacted
- Once approved, you will be considered an active volunteer.
OVERVIEW
Community Council is a group of volunteers who work behind the scenes to support athletes, coaches, and programs in Ontario.
Council members collaborate on initiatives such as:
- Welcoming new athletes and volunteers
- Creating and supporting local sport programs
- Health and wellness initiatives
- Promoting community awareness and engagement
- The Council meets approximately once per month (virtually or in-person), and members manage their ongoing responsibilities on their own schedule.
AVAILABLE ROLES
- Community Coordinator – Oversee community operations and lead Council meetings
- Treasurer – Manage community finances
- Data Administrator – Welcome new athletes and maintain accurate records
- Volunteer Coordinator – Recruit and onboard volunteers
- Community Media |Relations Coordinator ( Community Facebook account and website)
- Health & Wellness Coordinator – Promote athlete health and wellness activities
- Community Media/Relations Coordinator - Coordinate Community Facebook account and website; creating engaging and information communication
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We’re seeking individuals who are:
- Passionate about inclusion and community sport
- Strong communicators and collaborators
- Organized, reliable, and proactive
- Excited to make a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Previous volunteer or leadership experience is an asset but not required.
