Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Preparations
- Prepare culture media, standard solutions, dilutions, buffers & stains, chemicals, reagents, and other materials required for the delivery of science laboratories with a focus on biology and chemistry, as well as physics and earth science.
- Culture and maintain bacteria, plants, and other living organisms required for biology labs.
- Maintain knowledge of new developments and improvements in biology and chemistry techniques.
- Perform DNA extractions, digestions and ligations.
- Ensure that all laboratories are correctly set up, organized and taken down for the courses offered through the department.
- Maintain and operate instrumentation used in science labs throughout the year.
Quality Assurance and Safety
- Records, updates and maintains files, lists and general record keeping.
- Perform all the necessary safety procedures appropriate to the lab and promptly report any deficiencies and hazards.
- Collect hazardous waste generated during laboratories and safely document and store them for disposal.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness & safety in adherence to Occupational Health and Safety legislation and WHMIS legislation.
- Periodically conduct media quality control tests.
- Prepare samples for safe and stable transport to internal laboratories with required documentation.
- Maintain adequate quality control in the lab with appropriate documentation.
- Strong practical scientific bench skills.
- Familiar with laboratory safety procedures and a strong awareness of hazardous materials used in science labs.
- Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
- Willingness to learn new techniques.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a science-related field is required; Biology and/or chemistry is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of related experience.
- A strong science background with applied experience in lab procedures is required.
- The successful candidate should possess excellent work ethics and technical skills and be able to safely work independently and in a dedicated team.

This is a Full-Time Permanent AUPE appointment as a Science Lab Technician with the University Transfer department on the Lloydminster campus, commencing on August 17, 2026.
