As we continue to grow, we’re looking for a Site Safety Officer with strong substation and electrical utility construction experience, along with proven field leadership, and most importantly, aligns with our core values (Safety, Sharing, Standards, Speed, Solutions, and Stretch). This role will begin with a 12-month on-site assignment, providing safety oversight of contractors and field activities on behalf of a crown electrical utility client within active transmission and substation project environments. Following the initial assignment, the successful candidate will advance into an expanded Safety Consulting role within the company, with continued growth supported through ongoing in-house training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership & Compliance:

  • Provide visible field safety leadership across various substation and transmission projects.
  • Enforce compliance with company & client safety standards, WorkSafeBC regulations, and project safety requirements.
  • Exercise authority to immediately stop unsafe work and address hazardous conditions.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through proactive engagement and coaching.
  • Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of corporate Health & Safety programs, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Provide safety consulting support to internal stakeholders and external clients on regulatory compliance, hazard management, and industry best practices.

Field Monitoring & Inspections:

  • Conduct daily site inspections, safety audits, hazard assessments, and observations.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, pre-job meetings, and job hazard/risk assessments.
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure safe work practices, PPE compliance, and adherence to approved procedures.
  • Assist with client safety audits, compliance reviews, and preparation of safety documentation and reports.

Substation & Electrical Safety:

  • Support safe execution of work in energized and de-energized substation environments.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical safety requirements, grounding, lockout/tagout, and permitting procedures.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with high-voltage utility and construction work.
  • Provide guidance and support related to utility safety standards, contractor compliance, and operational risk management.

Incident Management & Reporting:

  • Participate in incident investigations and corrective action follow-up.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation, inspection records, and reports.
  • Track and communicate safety concerns, deficiencies, and corrective actions to project leadership.
  • Support incident trend analysis, lessons learned initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts across both project and corporate safety programs.
  • Assist with safety training coordination, orientation delivery, and development of safety communication materials as required.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety or related discipline preferred.
  • Minimum 5+ years of site safety experience within electrical utility, transmission, or substation construction projects.
  • Previous experience working on Crown utility transmission and substation projects is strongly preferred.
    1. Crown utility safety practices and procedures,
    2. WorkSafeBC regulations,
    3. High-voltage electrical safety requirements
    4. Construction safety management systems and contractor safety oversight in complex infrastructure environments.
    • Experience supporting EPC, utility, or infrastructure construction projects.
    • Experience working in and supporting both field-based and corporate Health & Safety functions is considered an asset.
    • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to provide both field-level safety leadership and client-facing safety consulting support.
    • Professional safety designation such as CRSP, CSO, NCSO, or equivalent is considered an asset.
    • Valid Standard First Aid certification required.
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.

    Individual compensation packages are based on various factors unique to each candidate, including skillset, experience, qualifications, and other job-related considerations. The hourly pay range for this role is from $58.00 - $68.00 per hour.
