Purpose of your Position - Non Union
Classification Summary - Union
A labourer physically assists City work crews.
Duties - Union
- Cuts and waters grass, using power lawnmower and power edger, as required.
- Cleans grounds of miscellaneous debris.
- Assists Gardeners in maintaining and pruning of flowers, trees, shrubs, and the laying of sod and repair of damaged turf.
- Assists in the installation, repair, or replacement of underground sprinkling systems, as required.
- Works on annual beach clean-up and cleans weeds from the lake, as required.
- Removes dead and damaged trees and shrubs, as directed.
- Sharpens and maintains hand tools, as required.
- Completes miscellaneous laboring tasks, such as cutting trees, emptying litter bins, sweeping sidewalks, and raking leaves.
- Shovels snow and clears sidewalks around civic buildings.
- Drives service truck in the collection of parks garbage, grass and tree cuttings, and similar refuse.
- Assists in the landscaping of parks and boulevards, including levelling and raking topsoil, seeding, and laying of sod and irrigating.
- Uses other hand-operated tools, such as portable pumps, motorized compactor, power saw, rototiller, jackhammer, compressor, etc.
- Performs related work as required.

Competencies
- Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work.
- Ability to work well with other employees, the general public, and employees of other companies.
- Necessary knowledge of sprinkler system installations repair and maintenance.
- Necessary elementary knowledge of parks and ground maintenance techniques, particularly as they pertain to turf maintenance and repair.
