The School of Environment and Geomatics is seeking an instructor to teach in the School of Environment and Geomatics. Under the supervision of the School Chair, the successful applicant will have the education and experience to provide instruction in some or all of the following courses, depending on qualifications and course availability: GIS programming, GIS Applications in Natural Resource Management, GIS applications in Forestry, GIS Professional Development, field GIS applications in Field Schools (RFW and Forestry), Maps and Navigation, and course development in remote sensing applications with RPAS (remotely piloted aircraft system) data.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to students
  • Deliver GIS courses in-person (computer lab and field) and online
  • Use industry standard software (proprietary and open source) and hardware
  • Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes and promote learning
  • Plan and implement field-based instruction using appropriate procedures to manage risk and safety
  • Evaluate students, including providing constructive and meaningful feedback to students
  • Actively contribute to the college and the school, including participate in school and relevant program meetings
  • Develop or update curriculum according to Selkirk College values, policy, and procedures
  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and other members of college staff
  • Protect student information
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Chair or Dean
  • Develop an online, compressed class on remote sensing using industry standard software, including both proprietary and open source software with a focus on data collected by RPAS

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated current expertise with:
    • ESRI suite of software with a range of remote sensing and GIS applications
    • Standard proprietary and open-source software used in remote sensing applications
    • Application of fundamental concepts in Geographic Information Science such as spatial data models, cartography, coordinate systems and datums, data visualization, data exploration and management, spatial data structures, spatial data analysis, and editing
    • Application of fundamental concepts in Remote Sensing such as data structures, image pre-processing, enhancement, classification, change detection, deriving 3D products, application of horizontal and vertical datums, principles of remote sensing including different sensors and platforms
    • Application of GIS field apps on tablets (ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey 123, Avenza) including creation of schemas, map products, and related workflows GIS applications in Natural Resource Management and Forestry including designing, managing, visualizing and analysing spatial datasets (vector and raster) using standard industry approaches and software
    • Cartographic design and map production for professional audiences
    • Fundamentals of python programming to scripting and automating the ArcGIS Pro software package using the ArcPy Application Programming Interface (API)
    • ArcGIS Pro model builder and Python IDE environments
    • Current trends in geospatial technology (Cloud GIS, UAV/drone data collection/internet mapping applications)
    • Translating technical GIS concepts into accessible and applied learning experiences
    • Use of a variety of manual and digital navigation tools in field settings (map, compass, GNSS, tablet applications)
    • Field trip route planning and implementation of appropriate safety protocols
  • Ability to recruit and coordinate a diverse range of GIS experts from industry, government and non-profit sectors
  • Understanding and application of current workforce expectations, emerging roles and in-demand GIS skillsets across industries.
  • Understanding of remote sensing principles, sensors
  • Familiarity with professional designations and certifications and their value in GIS career progression
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to teach:
    • In-person and online course development and delivery experience
    • Previous use of a learning management system like Moodle
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and academic abilities
  • Teaching students at the post-secondary level
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Ability to contribute to school and/or college initiatives
  • Provide personal experiences that build confident and imaginative learners ready to thrive in their
  • community and in our dynamic world
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong competencies in working independently and as part of a team

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in GIS or related field (must demonstrate GIS and Remote Sensing focus)
  • Two to three years teaching experience in a post-secondary environment
  • Industry remote sensing and GIS experience is desired.
  • Applicants with lesser education or experience may be considered for all or some of the available position.

This is a short-term position covering a leave for up to potentially 65% workload, depending on qualifications and availability. This position commences approximately August 10, 2026, and ends April 29, 2027; start and end dates dependent on actual courses awarded. Salary and Benefits are in accordance with the SCFA Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,709.12 - $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to SCFA members who are on layoff status and eligible for recall, as outlined in Articles 5.6 and 5.9 of the SCFA Collective Agreement.
