Primary Function

Work involving the performance of various tasks related to landscaping, soil preparation, planting, and maintenance of plants—herbaceous, semi-herbaceous, woody, and aquatic—in gardens, streets, parks, and green spaces, as well as driving a truck to transport the team, their tools, or a small amount of materials necessary for their work. The work is performed under general supervision. The employee receives instructions in both oral and written form. He or she must perform, in accordance with industry standards, tasks related to soil preparation, planting, and plant maintenance. This includes creating flower beds, plantings, and other types of floral arrangements. Planting and maintaining shrubs. Prepares and applies plant protection products. Maintains plants in the offices of municipal buildings. All of this is done to beautify the city and its parks. Creates planters and other types of floral decorations for municipal buildings. In addition, they must perform, within the scope of the specific examples listed below, and when the operation or driving of his equipment or vehicle is not required, manual tasks related to maintenance, cleaning, and general work, without, however, being required to perform tasks that might prevent him from immediately resuming his work as a driver or operator.

Main Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks related to soil preparation, transplanting, potting, planting, watering, mulching, weeding, and other tasks specific to various plants.
  • Performs soil preparation and planting tasks in green spaces, gardens, parks, and streets.
  • Performs plant maintenance: staking, pruning, topping, and weeding.
  • Prepares and applies plant protection products such as acaricides, bactericides, fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides necessary for plant protection.
  • Creates flower beds, plantings, and various floral decorations such as planters, baskets, or other arrangements to highlight different events.
  • Performs certain seeding tasks in gardens or other large areas and protects plants from weather conditions, pests, and weed growth.
  • Prunes small dead trees and maintains plants in the offices of municipal buildings.
  • Recommends to their supervisor the purchase of seeds, plants, materials, and tools necessary for carrying out the work. Participates in taking inventory
  • of plants.
  • Transports their team to work sites, along with their tools and small quantities of materials necessary for their work.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Hold a college-level certificate relevant to the position from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education, or have a diploma in horticulture issued by the Botanical Garden.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 provincial driver’s license.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak French.
  • Have a good command of spoken English.
  • Knowledge of horticultural vocabulary and nomenclature;
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of horticultural science;
  • Knowledge of insects and other pests, as well as major plant diseases and their symptoms;
  • Knowledge of plant protection products, fertilizers, and other chemicals, including their instructions for use and toxicity.
  • Skills in handling horticultural tools and equipment;
  • Ability to perform all horticultural operations correctly and efficiently;
