Position Type: Full-Time Temporary Summer Position (8 weeks) funded through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) Program

Position Overview
The Summer Student – Garden Education & Program Support plays an important supporting role in the coordination, operation, and delivery of programming at the Pencil Patch Garden for Learning. This position supports the Garden Program Coordinator in delivering hands-on, outdoor education by assisting with garden maintenance, school and community programming, and summer camp activities.
This role is ideal for a student interested in environmental education, food literacy, agriculture, experiential learning, or working with children and youth in an outdoor setting.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with preparing, organizing, and maintaining educational materials and learning resources
Support the delivery of structured, hands-on learning activities aligned with program goals
Assist with school visits, including program set-up, facilitation support, and clean-up
Help guide student participation in outdoor educational activities
Assist with daily garden operations including planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and general upkeep
Support maintenance of garden stations, demonstration plots, irrigation systems, and shared garden spaces
Assist with summer camp programming and outdoor learning activities
Support participant supervision and help maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment
Assist with visits from community groups, recreation camps, and teacher programs
Provide day-to-day operational support including set-up, clean-up, and organization of materials
Assist with light administrative and operational tasks such as organizing supplies, filing, and maintaining program spaces
Perform other related duties as required to support the needs of the position
Qualifications & Requirements
Currently enrolled in or returning to post-secondary studies preferred
Interest in education, agriculture, environmental studies, or related fields
Experience working with children and youth is considered an asset
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Strong teamwork skills with a willingness to learn and take direction
Reliable, organized, and able to work independently when needed
Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle required
Must be legally authorized to work in Canada for the duration of the term

Outdoor work in a garden environment
Physical activity including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods
Full-time schedule for the duration of the 8-week placement
